FLUID TECTONICS WAS A TEN DAY EXPERIMENTAL WORKSHOP HELD DURING DEX 2024 BY INDA, CHULALONGKORN UNIVERSITY. THE WORKSHOP EXPLORED THE POTENTIAL OF 3D PRINTING AS A MEDIUM FOR WEARABLE DESIGN, CHALLENGING STUDENTS TO REIMAGINE GARMENTS THROUGH MATERIAL, FORM, AND ASSEMBLY. WORKING WITH DIGITAL FABRICATION, STUDENTS CREATED A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTAL WEARABLE PROTOTYPES THAT INVESTIGATED NEW RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE BODY, MATERIALITY, AND EXPRESSION. RATHER THAN REPLICATING NATURAL FORMS, STUDENTS STUDIED THE UNDERLYING LOGIC OF PATTERNS, MORPHOLOGIES, AND GROWTH SYSTEMS FOUND IN NATURE. THESE OBSERVATIONS WERE ABSTRACTED AND REINTERPRETED INTO ORIGINAL WEARABLE DESIGNS THROUGH ITERATION, PROTOTYPING, AND 3D PRINTING. THE RESULT WAS A COLLECTION OF DISTINCT PIECES THAT EXPLORED HOW NATURAL PRINCIPLES COULD INFORM CONTEMPORARY WEARABLE DESIGN THROUGH DIGITAL MAKING.

THROUGH REPEATED PROTOTYPING, THE DESIGNS EVOLVED TO BALANCE FLEXIBILITY, WEARABILITY, AND VISUAL EXPRESSION WHILE RESPONDING TO THE LIMITATIONS OF 3D PRINTING. THE WORKSHOP ENCOURAGED AN ITERATIVE DESIGN PROCESS, DEMONSTRATING HOW DIGITAL FABRICATION CAN BECOME A CREATIVE TOOL FOR EXPERIMENTATION RATHER THAN SIMPLY A METHOD OF PRODUCTION.
