Patterned Roots: Groove Guided Growth

WE BEGAN BY ASKING HOW GROWTH COULD BE GENTLY GUIDED RATHER THAN CONTROLLED. THROUGH CNC MILLING, WE CREATED A ROOT INSPIRED TEMPLATE, CARVING A LANDSCAPE OF PATHWAYS THAT RESONATED WITH PATTERNS OF ORGANIC GROWTH. LOCAL VARIETY GRAIN SEEDS WERE GROWN ACROSS ITS SURFACE, AND SLOWLY, THEIR ROOTS GERMINATED AND GREW INTO THE MOLD, FILLING THE GEOMETRY WITH LIVING THREADS. ONCE REMOVED AND LEFT TO DRY, THE ROOTS RETAINED THE PATTERN LEAVING A FRAGILE MEMORY OF THE FORM THAT SHAPED THEM.

PART OF OUR LAB SERIES, THIS PROJECT EXPLORES NEW WAYS OF MAKING THROUGH MATERIAL EXPERIMENTATION, DIGITAL FABRICATION, AND LIVING SYSTEMS. FOR THIS STUDY, WE SELECTED A LOCAL VARIETY OF WHEAT FOR ITS RESILIENCE TO THAILAND'S TROPICAL CLIMATE, ALLOWING THE ROOTS TO GROW VIGOROUSLY INTO THE CNC-MILLED GROOVES. AS THE ROOT NETWORK DEVELOPED, IT FILLED THE TEMPLATE AND, ONCE DRIED, RETAINED THE GEOMETRY THAT HAD GUIDED ITS GROWTH. THE PROJECT INVESTIGATES THE POTENTIAL OF CREATING WITH LIVING MATERIALS, RESULTING IN A FORM THAT IS ENTIRELY ORGANIC, FULLY BIODEGRADABLE, AND CULTIVATED RATHER THAN MANUFACTURED.
