REEFSCAPE INVESTIGATES HOW ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING CAN BE APPLIED TO ARTIFICIAL REEF RESTORATION. DEVELOPED IN COLLABORATION WITH SCG 3D PRINTING, THE PROJECT EXPLORES A MODULAR APPROACH TO UNDERWATER HABITATS WHERE INDIVIDUAL UNITS CAN BE ASSEMBLED INTO LARGER ECOLOGICAL LANDSCAPES. RATHER THAN REPLICATING THE FORM OF NATURAL CORALS, THE DESIGN FOCUSES ON CREATING A SUITABLE SUBSTRATE THAT ENCOURAGES FUTURE MARINE GROWTH. THE MODULES FEATURE A NETWORK OF PORES, CAVITIES, AND VARIATIONS IN HEIGHT THAT PROVIDE SHELTER FOR FISH AND MARINE ORGANISMS WHILE INCREASING THE AVAILABLE SURFACE FOR CORAL ATTACHMENT. FABRICATED USING NONPLANAR 3D PRINTING, THE LAYERED GEOMETRY PRODUCES A HIGHLY TEXTURED SURFACE THAT ENHANCES BOTH ECOLOGICAL PERFORMANCE AND STRUCTURAL CHARACTER. ALTHOUGH THE PROJECT REMAINED AT THE PROTOTYPE STAGE, IT DEMONSTRATES THE POTENTIAL OF DIGITAL FABRICATION AS A TOOL FOR HABITAT DESIGN.
